When my alma mater (then known as St. Margaret’s-McTernan School) asked if I was interested in coaching tennis, I thought it would be a good excuse to get away from my computer for a few hours each day. And it was. But it also turned out to be the most challenging—and rewarding—position I've ever held.
I initially prepared by freshening up on tennis rules, drills, and technique. But in the end, it was everything that happened off of the court from which I learned the most. Having to interact with so many different personalities—the players, their parents, other coaches, school administrators, and spectators—offered daily lessons in the virtues of patience, diplomacy, sportsmanship, cooperation, discipline, and human character.
Due to a change of address and increased responsibilities at my day job, I had to leave my coaching days behind after two short seasons. I still remain in touch with some of the girls, and was even nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers by one of my former players. I only hope that I was able to inspire them half as much as they've inspired me.

Team Website | Although not required, each coach was given space on the school's website to post schedules, statistics, and other pertinent information. I designed a simple, fun page and updated it weekly with team records, match scores, and highlights. I also used this space as a repository for materials like the team rules, roster, and season schedule. Knowing that stats and recaps would be posted for all to see, the site gave the girls a way to track individual and team progress throughout the season—as well as a little extra motivation for playing their best.
